Fall of Rome Campaign

Battle between the Romans and Goths
with their Hun allies
in Dalmatia, Spring 451 AD

Romans field twelve elements versus the Goths with nine elements and their Hunnic allied contingent of three elements. Shown is the bound of Hun entry (4th bound).

The Roman forces are badly split up (7 groups), pressing the advance towards the awkward disposition of the Goth forces. On the left flank the Auxilia Palatina hold a gap in woods, on a hill edge, effectively barring it to the Goth Kn that face them. Moving right from the left edge, there is a column of two Foederati Wb moving into the woods, then the column of a Foederati Kn (front) and Roman Cv General (rear) cutting through the gap into the open glades beyond, then a second column of two Foederati Warband, then a column of Legionaries, then the second Foederati Kn and their one Light Horse. The Lh has been hit by Hun Cv Gen in the flank, and will turn at the end of the movement phase to fight at +1 to +4 (ouch!).

The Goth forces are in the middle of redeploying, trying to get some of their mounted through the gap to block the enemy Kn who are driving towards their warband.

Combat results were not what you might expect: the Hun General Cv was recoiled (at +4 to +1 in its favour). On its turn the Germanic Kn came driving in, hitting the center Hun Lh with an overlap for and against it, at +3 to +1. The Kn recoiled the Lh and advanced impetuously. On the next Goth/Hun bound the Hun reformed the line, with one LH swooping around to the rear of the enemy Lh, and killed both Roman troops (at +2 to +2 with a QK on the Kn, and +4 to +1 with no recoil on the Lh).

The rest of the battle (which went on for another six or eight bounds on both sides) was a race. The Romans were trying to hit and break the Goths before their camp was sacked by the Huns behind their lines. In a bloody fight they traded one element each, and the brave Roman camp defenders drove off the Hun Lh twice, but when the Hun Cv General reached the camp the battle was soon over.
