Fall of Rome Campaign

Battle between the Goths and Huns
in the Sarmatian Plains, Summer 450
(Part Two)

The first onslaught! On the left the first Hunnish light horse press to attack the Goth warband on the hill, hoping to draw it off and disorder the Goth line. The far left end of the Goth line is two of their three Knights; with their strong position on the hill the Huns are unwilling to press the attack yet. On the right the Hun subject Germans assault the Goth hill position with two Knights and a Psiloi, facing the Goth Kn General and two warband.

The Crisis! Combat results from the previous turn recoiled the warband on the left flank (+3 to +0: good roll for the Huns!). On the right flank the Goth Kn General resulted in a push against the first Hun Ally Kn; the second Hun Ally Kn slaughtered the Goth Warband in front of it. The second Goth Warband did better, routing the psiloi that faced it (seen at the bottom right of the image)

In the Goth turn they got 2 pips and spent them forming their right-side warband into a double-rank group that hit the flank of the Kn that had penetrated into their lines. A risky move, but if successful it could save their whole line. +3 to +3, loser dies.

Combat results from this turn went like this: On the far right the Hun rolled higher, and the double-rank group of Warband were slaughtered. The Goth Kn General killed his overlapped Kn foe, however, at +5 to +3, and charged bravely and impetuously into contact with the Hun light horse behind it.

On the next bound (not shown) the Hun advanced his psiloi on the left flank and moved his surviving ally Kn so they both provided overlaps against the Goth Kn General. At +3 to +2 the Goth General was defeated and killed. The battle was over.
