Default WADBAGCon 2009

Hey all,

Prepare for the premier gaming event of upper Montgomery County, MD! For the third (fourth?) year running, WADBAGCon will be held at a palatial gaming estate in the MD suburbs of DC (okay, the outer suburbs. The far suburbs. Cows sometimes break out and are found grazing on the lawn suburbs).

The date will be January 10, 17, or 24 -- date will be finalized in a week or so. Potential participants, and especially out-of-towners, please contact me if you want input into the date. Last year we had Bostwicks (the semi-mythical kind that were all getting married to each other at Fall In, or some such sob story) and Stooges, and lots of Donuts. Larry, Rich, Jonathan, Alex -- please get in touch with me if you can (I don't have your email). Ditto for anyone else from out of town who wants to try and make it -- Mike Porter, are you still in monastic isolation practicing Gregorian Chants (or St. Cyril's Chants, if Gregor isn't in favor among the Orthodox)?

The preliminary schedule is like this:

Friday Night: Wings of War, smacktalk, shooting the breeze, and flatulence. Hopefully not too much flatulence.

Saturday morning: Something informal. Possibly HotT, possibly Wings of War, possibly other things, depending upon interest and attendance. If you have a preference, get in touch with me SOON.

Saturday 1pm-6pm: 15mm DBA Open Tournament. 30" boards, dismounting only on the first bound.

Saturday 7pm-11pm: Punic War Campaign Theme! See below for description.

Saturday Late: Wings of War until 4am. Or later.

Punic War Campaign Theme:
Players may sign up on one of the following THREE sides:
  • Carthage
  • Rome
  • Everyone Else
Strategic rules will be an expansion of those used for the Peloponnesian War Campaign Theme at Fall In, with the addition of simple Supply rules that come into play when a Superpower army (Rome/Carthage) is defeated, and a couple of special rules (Carthaginian Elephants lost in battle can only be replaced if the army is campaigning in Africa, for example)

Armies used are:
  • II/32 Later Carthage (up to 4 players)
  • II/33 Polybian Roman (up to 4 players)
  • II/8 Campanian, Apulian, Lucanian, or Bruttian (up to one of each)
  • II/9 Syracusan (one player)
  • II/11 Gallic (up to 3 players)
  • II/39 Ancient Spanish (all three versions, no Bd option for Lusitanian) (up to 4 players)
  • II/40 Numidian (up to 2 players)

PM sent regarding preferred date, etc. I'd also like a Cartho spot, providing the date works out.

As soon as I get the date, I'll let you know. I'd like to as we had a good time last year (except for the sugar high from the donuts).

My Dad played that game at Historicon and loved it. I've been looking for an excuse to play it. Do you guys play the WWI, or WWII version?

WWI. Larry, that destroyer of innocence, introduced us to the game late (LATE) on Saturday night at Fall In. DS and Chris had already bought a plane or two. On Sunday I went to the dealers and got five or six myself.

I was already vulnerable, though -- Richtofen's War was the first board game I ever played, some time in the low '70s.

I was an addict for Richtofen's War! It wasn't what I cut my aerial combat teeth on though. The addiction for WWI aerial combat started with Dogfight! I wish I still had my copy. I've seen that game go for upwards of $50. A true classic.

We picked up a copy of WoW as well and our group had a blast. Good for kids too as my son picked it up very quickly. The best prices on planes is from the Warstore . . less online than what they were selling for at the con.

Default January 31 -- the date is fixed.

After consulting with everyone who actually responded on the date, WADBAGCon will be on January 31, 2008.

One of the issues was a crowding of potentates half-way between the two best dates, due to the local inauguration of newly elected President Obama on January 20. The WADBAGCon staff politely requested that President Obama move his inauguration to accommodate WADBAGCon attendance; the President-elect's staff politely declined.

An omen for their position on the military. Here come the budget cuts!

The Cult of Vol will infiltrate the White House. (J/K CIA/FBI/Homeland Security and any other watchers out there. No need to arrest me.)
