Wow!!! I learned so much in this post that they left out in the canonical version of Hogan's Heroes. I never realized the boys were ancient Hebrew warriors or that explosives and camo paint were so commonplace in Biblical Times.

Default Rethinking Samson

I am finally close to actually doing this, after thinking historical for a while and procrastinating on these guys. I am going plastic and already have Caesar's figures. I plan on having Philistines and Egyptians as well as a Hott Gladiator Army as their home grown opposition (I already also have the figures for a plastic fantasy gladiators Hott army).

I have been rethinking Samson and while he strayed from God's purpose at times, I am wondering if Paladin might suit him best since he seemed so much of the time to act independently of the other Hebrews, doing lots of one off mighty deeds. Does it sound reasonable to make him a Paladin, pretty much having his own agenda?

I am thinking the Prophet Samuel as a Cleric (he was referred to in his own book immediately following Judges and before the time of the Monarchy as a Judge), Shamgar and his oxgoad as a hero, Samson as either a Hero or a Paladin, Jael and her tent and stake as a Lurker, the Judge Deborah (with Barak by her side) as either a Warband or Cleric General (she was identified as a prophetess in the book of Judges). Most of the rank and file Hebrews will be Warband (I can't seem to picture them as anything else since spear, blade, and hordes don't really seem to capture them) and there will be a few shooters (fits the Biblical account too).

Default Judges etc classifications

After looking again at the source: The Biblical book of Judges.

I made the following classifications:

Generals: Othniel, Barak (unless Deborah is designated as a Cleric General with him as her companion), Tola, Jair, Jephthah

Clerics: Deborah, Samuel (the last Judge)

Sneaker: Ehud

Lurkers: Jael (with her stake); Gideon and his men (with jars, torches, and horns)

Hero: Shamgar

Hero, Paladin, or Behemoth: Samson

All other Hebrews are either Warband or Shooters with the Warband far outnumbering the Shooters. (Hordes, Blades, Spears, etc just don't seem to fit).

If the Army is continued past the Judges into the Early Monarchy of the United Kingdom of Israel, then David can be added as a Hero and later a Hero General, while Saul will be a General with his son Jonathan (with his shield bearer) as another Hero. Besides the Kings themselves, generals are pretty much identified as such after this in the text. Some formed infantry perhaps will appear in the form of David's mighty men, with several of them classifying as heroes (in the HOTT sense) themselves due to their exploits. So, besides the Heroes, perhaps a unit or two of Blades or Spear. The young David would provide, of course, a rather unique hero figure for Hott, with his shepherd's rod and sling. With the addition of chariots in the early monarchy, the general could now be a rider, though not a Knight.
