Here is the genesis of an idea for an event (or perhaps a "double-feature"?) that the NAGS group is thinking of hosting at ENFILADE in the Seattle area in late May. It would be a tourney, of sorts, with six, side-by-side, DBA games, each with some recent or classic blockbuster movie as its theme.
Beside each game-board would be a small sign or a DVD box of the flick itself, highlighting for passersby what's being played there. A "Spartacus" game, for example, would remain exclusively II/49 Marian Romans vs. II/45c Spartacus army thru the event, but players could play different games (movies) as they wished, as tables opened up. Players who won three (?) games would get a prize, e.g. a DVD or video of one of the movies or an Essex army-pack, regardless of the number of losses. That should create an incentive to play swiftly. Oh, and all players would get a box of movie candy, of course. --Other specific details are still to be worked out, e.g. perhaps a stipulation that a player can’t get his or her three wins all with the same army. Here are movie titles that came to mind, and the DBA armies associated with them: </font>

How about "300 Spartans?" That is considered a minor classic by many. Early Hoplites versus Early Achaemenid Persians!

"RAN" springs to mind but is that more Ren/DBR?
A quick search of a movie site looking for "action/adventure" movies with a sub-genre of "big battles" finds: David and Goliath (1961) The Giant of Marathon (1960) Samson (1961) The Long Ships (1964) Vikings vs Moorish for the Golden Bell! The camp potential! Joan, the Woman (1916) [ January 29, 2005, 12:45: Message edited by: Martian ] |

Here are a couple:
Henry V (chose your poison with the early or late version. I prefer the Branagh remake though). Agincourt IV/62. HYW English vs. IV64b. Medieval French or El Cid (Alfonso fights at Sagrajas and loses. Blames the Cid for the loss due to his absence. Also, Alfonso has to deal with his private guilt in murdering his brother Sancho. This battle is really not shown, but it is still a great movie. Anyone playing Ben Yusef has to do the Peter Lom eye twitch and mutter "Clusoe" for every "1" rolled in the battle.) III/35b. Feudal Spanish vs III/74. Fanatic Berber [ January 29, 2005, 15:25: Message edited by: Darren Buxbaum ]

How about Arthur, Sub-Roman British II/81 c option vs Early Anglo-Saxon II/73. Or a Michealangelo, Papal States III/76 vs Medieval German IV /13 b option. Tarus Bulba, IV/44 b option vs Polish IV/66. What about the Jack Palance Hunnic movie, Huns II/80 a option vs II/78 a option. John Waynes Ghengis Khan, Mongol Conquest Iv/35 vs Iv /46 Ilkhanid. There is also an Tishuro Mifune movie Samurai Trilogy , Post Mogol Japanese IV/59 b option spears vs b option Warbands. And what about Richard the Lion Heart First Crusade, IV/7 Early Crusader vs III/65 Fatmid Egytian. Another Viking file, Lee Majors leads men to save Chieftan, Viking III/40b vs IV/9 Eastern Forest American. Druids, Guals II/11 vs Marian Rome II/49. Another Viking, Charlton Heston in Warlord, Norman III/51 vs Viking III/40 b option. Last movie was a Russian film on the battle of Lake Piepus, Teutonic Orders IV/30 vs Post-Mongol Russian IV/44 a option.

If you want to dabble into Hong Kong cinema then the time has come to dig out 'The Valiant Ones' or 'The Beach of the War God' for a Ming Chinese vs Post Mongol Samurai (although these aren't perfect for Wako pirates).
This is perhaps best done as a big battle with special individual combat rules for when command elelments come into contact. Cheers

The Emperor and the Assassin: Warring States Chinese (Qin/Ch'in) vs Warring States Chinese (Zhao/Chao). There are many other movies on this theme too, probably some involving other sub-lists.
Musa (Warrior): Koryo Dynasty Korean vs Later Nomadic Mongol. The Ten Commandment: New Kingdom Egyptian vs a Waterway Andrew Ford |

Paul,
I would like to say this is a very cool theme for a DBA tourney and would seem to be an excellent way to draw folks in. A demo at a library or video store would seem to be a possibility too with this type of theme. Well done!
