Default CANCON 2013, DBA and The Worlds

Hello All,

At CANCON for 2013 I will be once again running the DBA competition. However, there are some changes to the format. First off if players from 2 or more overseas countries register to play then the DBA competition will become part of the Worlds. Secondly it will be a 2 day competition: The 1st day will be restricted to armies from Books 1 and 2, whilst on the 2nd day only armies from Books 3 and 4 will be eligible to be used. With the current flux regarding rules, version 2.2 will be used. There will be a Books 1 and 2 champion, a Books 3 and 4 champion and an overall champion, as well as other prize categories.

The dates for CANCON are 26-28 January 2013. DBA will be played on 27 and 28 January.

More details regarding the competition can be found here. Registration can be made here .

So if you are living in the northern hemisphere and want to miss the worst of the coming winter why don't you come to sunny Australia and play some DBA. If there are insufficient overseas players then DBA won't be part of the Worlds and for those who have paid the additional Worlds fee it will be refunded. November 1 2012 is the cut off date for DBA to be part of the Worlds. So if you are coming to the land downunder please register by October 31 2012.

Cheers,

HI there,

Why not hold off on a call for which version of the rules to use, If PB gets v3 out this month you'll have 5 months for people to get a copy.

A sparkly new edition may inspire people to turn up and play. (While the old edition may have the opposite outcome if they have started playing with the new.)

regards

David Brown

Or consider running it as 2.2+

I think Greg has made the right call here

We are hoping to host a World Championship for DBA here and the one common denominator across the world at the moment is DBA2.2 which everyone has played.

DBA3 has missed the boat as I doubt very much that it will be published in time to permeate through the ranks and DBA2.2+ is still in a Beta Testing mode AND is a little more regionalised

Well Done Greg

I will definitely be there and will see about registering from the Hutt River Province so that you have at least one international entry (if only it were that easy)

Cheers

Hi David B and Adrian,

I chose 2.2 exactly for the reasons David L mentions. I would hope that either of the 2 contending versions would be more bedded down before I would run a comp with either 2.2+ or 3.0.

Hope to see you all in Canberra come January. And David, I'll check with Tim if Hutt River Province does rate as an overseas country

Cheers,

The trouble with DBA 3 is that which particular version would be used?

I note Doug quotes that it is officially approved, but which particular version gains this status?

After spending a month in Italy all I want to do is play a game of DBA!

Regards
Steve

Hi Steve,

Well, DBA3 is officially endorsed by the rules author, but not yet released. So there isn't much question about that.

In the past we have allowed 3 months or so (at least) from release date before using new versions in competition, to allow players to obtain a copy and play at least some games before venturing out to play against battle-hardened 11 year olds in competition...

At this stage, with no indication of the release date, I assume 2.2 will be used.

Do keep in mind that the rules will not spring forth, fully grown like Vensus. There have been and will be drafts available for review. Will the final text version be public prior to printing? Perhaps the final draft minus 1. Perhaps the final draft of text without diagrams or final lists?

Still a couple of months for the complete final version would be good. Given the radical changes in this version, people will need some time to work out winning tactics. Even with playtesting, there cannot possibly be all the nuances worked out. Terrain alone has hundreds of variations possible that will take a year or more of public play to find flaws.

You mean Athena, from the brow of Zeus. Venus is the Roman version of Aphrodite, who (according to Hesiod) arose from the sea-foam after Kronos cut off the genitals of Uranus (which is not something I get to say out loud every day) and threw them into the sea.

Here's a photograph of the big event according to Botticelli, who was there:
