Lawton-Gordon-Evans Georgia Brigade

Chronology of Wartime Service

August 22-24, 1862

On August 22, Lawton Brigade participated in advance toward the Warrenton Springs fords, stopping at the ruined bridge at Sulphur Springs.

"Only a few of the enemy's cavalry had been descried, and he at once made preparations to effect the passage of the Rappahannock. The 13th Georgia dashed through the ford, and occupied the cottages of the little watering-place. Early's brigade and two batteries crossed by an old mill-dam, a mile below, and took post on the ridge beyond." Despite risk that heavy rain and swollen rivers might cut off this advance force, Jackson declined to cross and encamped the balance of his force on the western bank. See Henderson, vol. ii, pp. 118-119.

The next morning, Jackson's column stood in place while pioneers engaged in rebuilding the bridge. Isolated and fearful of being cut off, Early's Brigade withdraw on eastern bank to Great Run and repelled a Federal cavalry attack at nightfall. Gen. Lawton's Brigade was sent to reenforce Early, with a curt message from Jackson, "Tell General Early to hold his position." Henderson, vol. ii, p. 119.

On August 24, Early and Lawton's troops were withdrawn to the east bank. "The men had been for two days and a night without food or shelter." Henderson, vol. ii, p. 119. Lee met with Jackson, agree on plan to split the army.

Jackson's troops assemble near Jefferson and prepare three days rations.
