Lawton-Gordon-Evans Georgia Brigade Chronology of Wartime ServiceAugust 9, 1862Lawton's brigade detached with Gregg's Brigade by Jackson to guard the train at Rapidan crossing. See Wartime Papers, p. 273, Henderson, vol ii., p. 90. Battle of Cedar Run: Jackson's army marched (10-12 miles) toward Culpepper Court House, lead elements reaching Ceder Run at noon.Finding enemy cavalry and artillery supported by Bank's infantry, Jackson formed line of battle at 2:45 p.m. and positioned artillery to challenge Union batteries. At 5:00 p.m., Union General Banks ordered an assault, which broke Confederate left flank rolling up Winder's Division and Early's left. The Stonewall Brigade, Lanes Brigade and Hill's Light Division counterattacked, driving Union forces from the field at approximately 6:30 p.m. Jackson pursued for over a mile by the light of a full moon, but halted advance after confronting a new line of infantry and artillery. | Top | 1862 | Chronology | Home | Last Updated: Jan. 21, 2001 |
