Lawton-Gordon-Evans Georgia Brigade

Chronology of Wartime Service

August 8, 1862

March toward Culpepper to Rapidan crossing. Lawton's Brigade marched in rear, escorting the wagon train, so that Jackson could place Gen. Winder (who was junior to Lawton) in field command of the division.

It was a poor days march, with some divisions moving only 2 miles. "Jackson's soldiers never did a worse day's work during the whole course of his campaigns." Henderson, vol. ii, p. 88. Henderson blames heat, confusion in orders, and lack of zealousness by A. P. Hill.
