Chronology of Wartime Service

July 2, 1862

Spent the night on the field encamped in rain. Jackson's troops (including Lawton's Brigade) were deployed in three lines of battle, and allowed to cook rations while ammunition was replenished. By 11:00 a.m., ammunition was replenished and his four divisions were formed awaiting orders to advance.

Lee, his commanders, and Jefferson Davis held a late afternoon Council of War and resolved to advance the next day.
