General Robert E. Lee writes to General Stonewall Jackson suggesting the strategic movement of his forces from the Shenandoah Valley to Richmond to participate in a counterstroke against McClellan's Federal army: "Should there be nothing requiring your attention in the Valley so as to prevent your leaving it a few days, & you can make arrangements to decieve the enemy & impress him with the idea of your presence, please let me know, that you may united at the decisive moment with the army near Richmond."
