Chronology of Wartime Service

April 16, 1862

Col. Marcellus Douglass with two companies of the 13th Georgia (approximately 90 men) were scouting the island of Whitemarsh, when a steamer began off-floading over 800 troops from the 8th Michigan. In a running skirmish that lasted several hours, the Georgians held the Federals at bay until dark, and the next morning, they discovered that the Federal troops had abandoned the island.
