Reviews of Old Glory 15mm Miniatures
Old Glory 15s share their name with Old Glory Miniatures (25mm), but are owned and produced by a different company located in the United States.
Chris Brantley on OG Frank/Late German Axemen/Swordsmen (FR3)
This relatively new range from Old Glory 15s features later Frankish/German troops suitable for the Fall of Rome to early Dark Ages period and can be easily employed as Goths, Vandals or other period foot. The bag is supposed to be composed of 50 figures. Mine came with 53 figures in 10 variations. All have round shields. I have listed the number provided and description of each figure, although I am not sure the number of figures and variants is uniform from one bag to the next. My bag contained:
- 2 x Swordsman, advancing with sword raised and round shield at side. Bearded with spagenhelm, tunic and cloak. Could work as a chieftain or leader.
- 1 x Swordsman, advancing with sword held overhead, held like a javelin. Bearded with shield and tunic; no helmet or cloak. A somewhat odd but nonetheless interesting pose.
- 2 x Swordsmen, advancing with sword overhead. Bearded with tunic and shield; no helmet or cloak.
- 5 x Swordsman, standing with sword raised overhead. Figure is beared with a top-knot. Shield and tunic; no helmet or cloak.
- 3 x Swordsmen, standing with sword held pointing 45 degrees downward from waist. Bearded with tunic and shield; no helmet or cloak.
- 7 x Swordsmen, advancing with sword leveled at waist behind shield. Figure has fur over a tunic; no beard, helmet or cloak.
- 8 x Axesmen, advancing with francisa-style axe leveled at waist behind shield. Figure has fur over a tunic and is bearded; no helmet or cloak.
- 11 x Axesmen, standing/advancing with francisa-style axe with shield. Figure is in an open guard posture, standing with axe forward and shield behind. Figure has mustache and tunic; no helmet or cloak.
- 8 x Axesmen, advancing with hand axe (not the curved francisa-style) overhead and shield. Figure has tunic and cloak; no helmet.
- 6 x Axesmen, advancing with hand-axe (not the curved francisa-style) overhead and shield. Figure has tunic and cloak; no helmet. Similar to figure above, but figure is not advancing as aggressively and the axe is held overhead parallel to the shoulders.
I am using a dozen of these figures along with a hodgepodge of Gladiator, Essex, Outpost Wargames Services Goths/Saxons to create an Early Vandal army, and must say I am very pleased. The Old Glory figures compare favorably with the Gladiator Goth figures, which are some of the best around. The figures mix well in size and heft, and the variety of figures plus the very active poses of the Old Glory miniatures give the army a proper "warband" look. They were well cast with minimal flash, except for a few release points on the the bottom of a couple of the bases and an annoying mould line/gouge on the shields, both of which were easily filed.
James Sean Britt on OG 15mm Marian Roman Command Pack
I have purchased the15mm Marian Roman command figs from Lord Al's and
thought I would comment. The MR3 - Marian Roman Command pack includes the following:
4 horses with seperate riders: 3 riders with typical Marian helment, cape and armor. One rider basically the same as the others sans helmet, obviously the general. Riders are in a pose with their right arm looking like they are flexing their muscle, perhaps signaling a halt.
8 Standard Bearers: 2 different types of standards with all wearing link
mail armour and a shield. Also the typical animals head headgear is
worn.
8 Horn Blowers: Same dress and armour as standerd bearers. All armed
with mighty trumpets.
9 Legionaries: In various advancing poses with shield, helmet, and link
mail. One quibble about this fig is that they are either armed with a club or the worse looking sword I have ever seen.
These are not small figs, measure 18mm, and would not match to well with
figures like Essex in my opinion. The detail is very good with only small amounts of flash. For $12.50 I must recommend these to the fullest. You're only a few 50 fig bags away from having yourself a Gaul and Marian DBA army to slug it out, and why your at it you could pick some extra Marians to refight their civil wars. Excellent Value.
Derek de Villiers on OG Rus
Here is a description of two packs of 15mm Old Glory Rus and Slav warriors:
Rus -- Tunic Warriors (RU3) -- 7 different poses. All are bareheaded, have cloaks and round shields with a small pointed boss. Bag contained a very generous 58 figures in total:
- 13 x figures advancing behind shield with axe above head; moustache.
- 6 x figures with axe held out at side advancing behind shield; clean shaven
- 2 x figures advancing with sword raised above head and shield at side;
moustache
- 4 x figures advancing with sword held at waist level behind shield; with
moustache
- 9 x figures advancing with spear raised behind shield; with moustache
- 11 x figures advancing with spear raised with shield at side; with moustache
- 6 x figures throwing spear with shield at side; bearded
In terms of size, these figures would mix well with Essex, and Donnington. They are not as clean as Essex, but generally have more animated stances. There is more detail than Donnington. It would have been nice to have less of the poses where I received 13 and 11, and more of the poses where there where two and four. We as customers should bring it to Old Glory's attention that for barbarian armies we want
figure variety. Their packaging of figures should be more balanced.
Derek de Villiers on OG Slavs
Slav Swordsmen and Axemen (SL2) -- 9 different poses. Bag contained 30 axemen and 21 swordsmen for a total of 51 figures:
- 9 x axemen wearing helmets advancing behind kite shield, long handled axe
held down; with moustache
- 10 x axemen advancing behind round shield, axe at side, bareheaded with
moustache
- 11 x axemen advancing behind round shield, axe raised above head,
bareheaded with moustache
- 2 x swordsmen advancing behind large oval shield with sword at side. Very
nice pose.
- 4 x bareheaded swordsmen advancing behind round shield with sword raised
above head.
- 11 x swordsmen wearing a helmet advancing behind round shield with sword
raised above head. This pose and the above are very similar.
- 1 x swordsman wearing a helmet advancing behind round shield with sword
raised and wearing a cloak. He would make a very suitable command figure, and may even be from the Command Pack.
- 1 x swordsman advancing behind round shield and slashing with sword in front
of himself above his shield. Again, this is a very nice pose.
- 2 x bareheaded swordsmen with sword raised above head and round shield at
side.
All the Slavs with round shields have small bosses. Again I would comment that the figures are compatible with Essex and Donnington in terms of size and sculpting.
Essex only has a single figure for Slav axemen, so these Slav axemen will
provide considerable variety. Again I was disappointed in that I only received 1 or 2 figures of what I considered to be the best figures amongst the swordsmen.
Slav Spearmen (SL2) -- This pack included ten figure variations. Comprised as follows:
- 9 x advancing with narrow kite shield wearing helmet.
- 13 x standing with narrow kite shield wearing helmet.
It needs to be noted that these two figures are very similar.
- 8 x standing behind round shield with pointed boss, bare-headed with
moustache and upright spear.
- 4 x jogging forwards behind shield with pointed boss, bare-headed with
moustache and upright spear. This figure is very different to the previous one.
- 3 x advancing with round shield with pointed boss at side.
- 1 x throwing spear with large oval shield. This is a very nice figure.
- 3 x thrusting spear over round shield with pointed boss.
- 7 x standing with spear behind round shield with pointed boss.
- 2 x advancing with spear behind round large oval shield with a vertical boss.
- 1 x advancing with spear and large oval shield at side.
All of the figures with round or oval shields are bare-headed and have
moustaches. Bag contained a total of 51 figures. In general the figures are clean, with very little flash. I would again complain that there were too many of some figures (in this
case the spearmen with kite shields) and too few of other figures. It seems
that it is always the nicest figures that arrive in the smallest quantities,
and the worst ones in larger numbers. Old Glory 15's really needs to rethink
their selection re: packaging in my opinion. I would prefer to see a more
balanced spread of figures. In this case, with ten poses, why not package
five of each pose? We as buyers should bring this to Old Glory's attention.
