By Greg Kelleher. The BUA is a a mix of scratch building and
integrating of scenics. The tower is a resin model put out by Hornby in
their model railway scenics line. It comes in sandstone colours. But I
wanted greyish tones. So I gave it a wash with a Paynes Grey magic wash and
then dry brushed it with lighter greys. The contrasting stonework around the
doors and windows was picked out in a sandstone colour. I enhanced the tower
by scratch building the draw bridge and used fine chain. The ramp to the
draw bridge is high density polystyrene that has been scribed with
stonework. The two abodes are plaster casts that I picked up at MOAB
07 for $10.00 at the "Bring and Buy". I redid the paint job. The terrain is
a mix of expanded and extruded (HD) polystyrene. The plinth for the tower is
HD polystyrene and the contours for the rest of the base is the less stable
expanded polystyrene. The expanded polystyrene was carved and hotwired to
shape, given a PVA coating and then covered with a sand and plaster mix that
was precoloured very dark grey. Once all of this was dry I then did
progressive dry brushes. All of the buildings were glued to the terrain and
then all of the flocking was applied.
