Tamil Indian
(DBA II/42)

By Simon Bargery

Here are some pics of my 25mm Tamil Indian army. The figures are mostly Vendel with some Gripping Beast Psiloi (not pictured). The figures are not quite finished yet - the elephant bases need a lot of work.

Notes on Painting

The elephants were one of my first efforts with a new (to me) range of paints - Chromacolour Cel paints. These are sold mainly to the animation world for painting frames. They are quite nice to use and seem to have a transparency that gives nice warm effects. The orange blanket shows this up best.

I painted the elephant skin in shades of brown over a black undercoat, I normally do everything in white undercoast. I dry-brushed the skin from deep chocolate brown up to a dark tan colour then set about blending in some highlights arond the face and ears. The tusks are mainly cream with some dark brown detailing around the root.

I used Windsor and Newton inks to provide depth to shading where needed - on the skin of the Indians and the General's scale armour etc. I use nut brown, burnt sienna and green and blue inks.

I picked the patterns for the elephant blankets from a site found on the web, going for the more flowery ones as Tamils love flowers apparently.
