Chris Brantley's
WENDS (580-1218 AD)
(DBA III/1a)
The Wends were migrating tribes of Slavic origin (Pomeranians,
Liutizians, Obotrites, Rani, Sorbs, Veletians, etc.) who settled amongst and
assimilated the German populations between the Elbe and Oder Rivers. They
became Baltic raiders, doing to the Scandinavians of Sweden and Denmark what the
Vikings were doing to the English, Scots, Irish and French. Later, they
unsuccessfully resisted German colonization and Christian conversion during the
Northern Crusades. My Wendish army is made up of the highly expressive
15mm Gladiator Prussian/Lithuanian figures painted by MikeyGees, with a command
stand bearing a banner depicting the "World Tree" of Slavic mythology done for
me by David Kuijt. The army is pure Pagan, no German mercenary option and
only one trained Bow element here. For more detail, there are two
additional shots of the army arrayed: [ close-up ] [close-up].
I use many of the same figures to morph Prussian and Estonian armies.
