Adrian Crawford's
Spartans (II/5a)

A Later Hoplite army featuring 15mm Xyston Miniatures painted by Ian Marsh and photographed by Simon Davey. There are a few extra elements of 4Spear than needed, again so a Spartan general's command can be used in DBM. All of Ian's Lambda shield designs were done by hand. Photography - done with a Canon D30 and most photos taken with a Canon 210mm on macro. Army shots taken with a Canon 70mm. All photos taken on self-timer, with the aperture stopped right down, and of course using a tripod. Photographed in natural daylight if possible.

The painting technique uses black undercoating and then a two-tone layering method for blocks of colour, leaving thin pieces of the black undercoat to provide deep shadows, and areas of the darker colour show folds in the cloth and the lighter colour is used for highlights. Horses are done using Colour Party paints, thinned slightly to give a feathered effect where the colours meet. Black undercoat again on the horses, and no colour is applied below the knees, giving the darker lower legs and deep shadow effect all in one. Socks and blazes added in realistic positions and patterns for variety. These techniques of Ian's are described in more detail in two articles on painting infantry and cavalry for Wargames Journal
